Just Another Step In The Things We do

Well, a few weeks ago, prior to deer hunting season and the sudden arctic plunge into winter, I posted a piece on how we clean up a deer skull to make it, if you are into such things, presentable, and preserved, which you can see here: http://threedaughtersfarm.com/wp/?p=5323

Yesterday, I arrived home, after doing a mid-week butchering of the deer Claire and I had left down at my parent’s home, just in time to cook Patti’s birthday dinner of seared venison loin and fried rosemary potatoes.  IMG_4711

I also had to get the deer heads into the ground before it became a rock.  Night time temps are damn close to 0 degrees, so it is going to run a deep frost line quickly.  For the moment though, digging a hole was not too bad.IMG_4712

Claire did the bending and stooping for me.  I do not bend well any more, but I can dig a hole.  <grin> IMG_4714

Then it was time to backfill it with dirt again, and wait until next fall to uncover and clean them up.IMG_4715

Piper wants to uncover them now, so I am glad her portion of the yard is fenced off from the gardens.  She has her deer parts, being the bones and fat trimmings, which should, once the rest of the family’s deer are harvested and processed, keep her fat as a tick until sometime in February.

We have a lot of meat to find places to store now.  More food gathering this weekend.  Looks as though this is going to be another long, cold, snowy winter.
