A Touch Of Summer In Fall

Had a warm evening, where the kids could play into the twilight, which is coming earlier every evening, without need of a jacket.  Tomorrow is supposed to be warmer, and the kids are off of school for MEA week, so they are around to help care for Violet as well while I am at the office and Patti is trying to work from home.

Leaves are falling pretty steadily now, and Dave Across The Street (yeah, that is what the kids call him) made a big leaf pile for the kids to play in, which they happily did.

While the Ness Farm garden is frosted out completely, as well as the Minnetonka Garden which Frank cleaned up and hauled the cages out of, here on the island we have been spared the worst of the frost for now, it having only taken out some of the beans, and nipped the edges of the tomato plants.

Still getting ripe tomatoes here and there.  The parsley is doing great.  I started and planted just a few plants, being 6, but last year’s self seeded, and I allowed all of that grow, so I have probably 50-60 plants of the stuff as undergrowth in the front garden.  <grin> Guess I will be dehydrating and storing a lot of dried parsley this year.

Still getting a few Galina tomatoes out of the garden.  A Siberian variety, it is really cold hardy.

Joe Lauerer tomates survived the light frosts as well.

Chard and kale have thrived all through this cool summer, and are still fresh staples in a lot of our cooking.  Kale will make it well into the winter.  Chard will survive down to the mid-20s before freezing out.

Got some interesting potatoes from a friend.  This is an Irish Cobbler, and huge.  Taste was fine, but had some odd hollows in the middle.  Not real large hollows, but they were slightly discolored around the interior edges.

I have grown fingerling potatoes in the past, but I was given a couple which look like huge misshapen hands.  I broke it apart, scrubbed it clean, cooked it up, and it was one of the most wonderful buttery textured potatoes I have ever had.  Going to try to store one of them through the winter for planting next year.  With the odd shape and nobs on it, I would imagine I could get a ton of plants from just one of these.

Anyway, that is all.  As an FYI I am thinking of turning off the comments option for a while.  I am getting innundated by spam comments I have to sort through trying to sell me/you UGGS and Louis Vitton bags, or cheap sports jerseys from China.  Going through 2-300 comments a day of garbage spam-linking comments is something I could likely end if I was more savvy in using/setting up stuff here, but I think I am behind by a generation in the computer knowledge side of things.
