Just An Afternoon With Nell

Had stuff to do at the Ness farm, Nell owed me some work time.  We went and spent the afternoon there together.

There were a lot of garter snakes about.  Nell is not afraid of them, only reason for the gloves is that when we are weeding we run into Canadian thistle, and the kid’s hands are not as calloused as mine, so they get full of the thorns.

Nell found this cool mosquito eater in the Iroquois White Flour corn.  That, cowpeas and squash were what got weeded today.

The Baby Vi Mochata squashes actually are setting a prodigious amount of fruits.  Counted 5 on this one plant alone.

Good to see so many fruits on them and still a months of summer to go.

The Jimmy Nardello peppers I put out there are starting to flower.  I put in the extra planting of them here because I have promised a friend out west that I will ship him a bunch of the peppers.

So, this is the Iroquois White Flour corn, and one of the rows of Baby Vi Mochata squashes.  All weeded and the areas between rows mowed.  Maybe a quarter of the plants showing tassels, but no silks yet.  That will happen in the next few days.

This one is looking down the onion rows at the Speckled Blue Flour corn.  Nearly all tasseled and silks on most plants.  To the left of them is the Pink Flour which is tasseling at about 60% but silks are just starting to emerge.

Mowed around, and then weeded the vining cowpeas.  Last time I can mow, and maybe should not have.  Probably cut off a dozen side runners on them not realizing that they were vining yet through the weeds.  Should have weeded them first.  Oh well.

I am really sore after all of this.  Just relaxing now for the evening after making dinner and all of us eating.  No rain in the forecast and I need to get to the Minnetonka garden this week as Frank is on a fishing trip and is not checking on that garden.  I will try to remember to bring a camera with me there next time I go.

Have a good week everyone!
