Not So Bad Once You Cut Down The Weeds

So these are my weed remediation buddies who came out with me to the Ness Farm this evening.  Today was the first day to try out the mowing between rows bit.  The mowing was my job.  Their job was plucking weeds from the rows themselves, being the tomatoes and onions.

Doesn’t look like much when you have only taken one swipe with the mower.

So you work your way around the place.

Things start taking form.

After multiple swipes though, the rows of deliberately planted things take definite shape.

I took all of the clippings and mulched the north half of all of the popcorn which was looking more anemic than any of the other corn.  I think that is the worst of the soil in the garden as even the weeds were not growing really vigorously there.  Kept the clippings a couple inches away from the bases of the corn plants so I don’t burn them out as the clippings release the stored nitrogen to the soil.  My hope is that tomorrow things are dried enough to finish tilling and planting the last few things I want to get into this garden and have the girls haul water for a light application of fertilizer to give the things I want to grow, a pop that the bits getting mowed do not get.  When I was all done with the mowing it actually looked pretty good.  Will have to see how this plan holds up over the whole summer.  Have never tried doing a garden this way before, but so far it seems to hold some promise.
