Planting, potting up, and rooting cuttings

Another day of planting.  Not too much, just a few flats of basil in case winter does ever end here, marigolds, and lemon grass (which is a first for me).  The flats of cabbage and broccoli I started on my birthday are all coming up thickly.  In fact, much thicker than I thought it would because the seeds I used were 4 years old.  Nice to see that I am still getting germination of about 90% on those.

The tomatoes I started back in mid-February were potted up today.  Last year I had them in the ground on March 28th. Not this year.  Not even close.  Tax day used to be what I would shoot for with my early plantings and I am thinking I will be lucky if it is that early this year.

There is no sign that the ice is going to be off the lake any time soon.  Temperatures tonight will likely be down to about 15 degrees and the blizzard we had on my birthday is still not done melting away.  There is maybe 4 inches of it on the ground yet though the days since have made it to the 30s with plenty of sunshine.  Still getting a little bit of maple sap.  I cooked what I had down to a pint today.

The prunings from the two grape vines I did find the other weekend at the Red Wing gardens had been kept in a vase until today.  I trimmed them down a bit, re-cut the ends, dipped them in rooting hormone and potted them.  This is a new thing for me.  I have never propagated grapes before but I am hoping it is as easy as rosemary.  I also took a few cuttings from my rosemary which has been happily growing in the cold breezeway all winter.  Not that I need more rosemary plants, but I have had a few requests for some so I thought I should get on that. Not a bad day.  Maybe I will pot up some of my early started peppers tomorrow.
