Horseradish

There was a surprise waiting for me in my mailbox yesterday.  A box from an online friend of mine containing a dozen horseradish crowns.  I have never grown the stuff, but I do enjoy it as a condiment on everything from ham to sushi.  Thankfully we had some rain the last few days and the ground was soft.  I just dug up a 30″ x 30″ spot in a corner of the garden that gets a good amount of sun, stuck the crowns in until all that showed was the green at the top, and that was it.  My friend assured me later that what I had done was all that I needed to do, though when I mulch the garlic later it would be a good thing to put some over the crowns as well.  He also told me that the horseradish, short of employing a glycophosphate to the garden, is there to stay.  Fine by me.  I do like the perennial aspect of some crops, and up here, not a ton are that cold hearty.
