Family & Melons

The girls all came out to the Ness Farm garden with me this evening and picked melons, corn, tomatoes and dried beans.  I really appreciate the help, and thank you dear wife for driving us all.  Hopefully I will be cleared for driving again soon and I can get out to the gardens whenever I want to.

So anyway, these are all melons from the seeds given to me by Michel up in Canada of his Gnaddenfeld cross.  More variety this time, and we cut into three of them later here at home.  Still all taste good, though one with pale green flesh the kids were not as partial to, though I liked that one better myself.  Some of them were really big.  There were 3 in excess of 10 pounds that got tossed to the Ness’ chickens because they got overripe and were collapsing and dripping juice everywhere.

The chickens sure appreciated that though.  I am going to have to figure out something to do with all of these melons.  There are a lot more to come too.  I wonder if you can dehydrate them like apples?

ps:  I did cut them up and layered up the dehydrator.  A quick read on the internet said they turn into a sweet flavored dehydrated fruit, so what the heck.  Always need things for the kid’s school lunches.  Gave the the opportunity to try them all, and the best one was the largest one, which also yielded the most seeds.  <grin>  Second place went to the smallest one, which was sweet and ripe right up to the rind.  Will have to tell you later how the dried version tastes.
