Three Hours

The weather is hot.  Not too hot for plants.  In fact, it is idea, growing conditions for beans, corn, squash, and tomatoes.  The heat is only too much for me.

So I sat out most of the day.  Patti’s parents watched the kids while we went to a movie together.  The first time we have had an adult “date” in quite a few months.  Prometheus was the one we wanted to see together and we were not disappointed.  It was a great pleasure to see a movie that was not oriented towards young kids.

I did get gardening in.  I spent the last 3 hours of daylight out at the Ness farm.  I even planted a row of beans.  25 feet of Arikara Yellow beans, and 50 feet of Hidatsa White, which has survived in popular cultivations as Great Northern White beans.  May have planted these earlier in the season as well.  I am not sure.  I have planted a lot of beans, and have kept poor records.

On the drive to the Ness’ I passed a beautiful lady.  So beautiful I turned around and drove back to look at her.  I asked if I could take her picture and she did not say no.

When I was done at the Ness farm, some three hours later, with the sun already set and entering the twilight hours, I walked to the top of the septic mound and snapped this photo of the western side of the garden.

This shows about half of the garden, and does not include the eight 300 foot long rows of sunflowers, or 175 X 500 feet of Victor Kucyk 2175 corn which is growing on the north side of the property.  My efforts today were hand watering the beets I planted where the poor emergence of Green Leaf Lutz Storage beets are, which are Dark Red Detroit  beets (Which taste great and we will pressure can) and cultivating tilling around the later plantings of melons, squashes and tomatoes.  This garden is looking good.  Efforts appear to be on the cusp of being rewarded. To all appearances, this summer will be a rewarding one.
