A Break

So, it is December.  The hunting that will be done, is done.  The food that will be put up, is up.  The freezers are all full, and there are baskets and boxes of squashes, garlic, apples and onions filling what little space the house has left.

Today was meant to be a day with family in Eau Claire.  Was not to be.  40 minutes into the drive the Explorer developed a (new) high pitched whine, which suddenly stopped and the battery light came on.  Since it is a new battery, it could only mean the alternator has some issue.  I am not a mechanic, so it was time to turn around and pray we got home without running the battery dead.

We did make it home, and instead of being in Eau Claire, we spent the day getting the tree up, watching the old claymation of Rudolf The Red Nosed Reindeer, making a huge cheese pizza (home made crust, and red sauce, but had to buy the cheese) with roasted garlic baked into the crust.  The kids and I watched Spirited Away while Patti strung garlands and hung seasonal decorations, and now I am dreaming.

Yesterday I finally mulched my garlic here.  Real cold has not shown yet and if there was enough snow I would not be too worried about it, but I need to, at some point, get to the Minnetonka Garden and mulch the bed of garlic I put in there too.  My seeds need to be gone through and cataloged.  Ground outside is white with a thin layer of snow and all I can think of is green.  Winter though, there is some time for me to rest while the ground sleeps.  Maybe I will dig out some potting soil and start some plants early, just to start something growing, but for now, it is a break from the work, and the wonder of indulgence in the foods we spent the most part of a year gathering.
