Doing Much Better

Right now we are getting ready to head out and pick up apples one last time before it turns too cold.  I called over to Homestead Orchard and Jerry there said that though it is quiet there, the orchard is still open.

I spent the beginning part of yesterday digging potatoes at the Minnetonka Garden, and pulling the rest of the beans.  This is just for dry beans now.  The plants have frosted multiple times and this is just going to be for soups this winter.  I spent an hour shelling them while Patti and I watched a movie.  Ended up with about a gallon of mixed dry beans from it.  The potatoes I dug, 24 hills, yielded about 10 pounds of potatoes which is a disappointment  but oh well.  Patti and the kids will help me dig the rest.

The other thing I did yesterday was pull honey and work on extracting it.  Not going to be hundreds of pounds, but at least should be enough to last us until next year.  We will end up with a good amount of beeswax as well.  Maybe we will even do dipped beeswax candles this winter sometime.  Would be a fun winter project.

Why does the Federal government even price milk at all? That is not the indeetnd role of government as outlined in our founding documents. Why can’t I say to my surrounding processors, “Hey, I produce six tons of milk a day, 110,000 SCC, 4.1% BF, 3.2% Pro and I want $28.00 for it.” Isn’t that free market? Why can’t farmers have a shake at the free market? The only role the government was ever supposed to have in the private sector is making sure interstate commerce remains open. The federal government should be protecting our domestic markets from the intrusion of foreign products, which they are not. I can’t help but think of Ronald Reagan saying, “In this present crisis, government is not the solution to the problem; government is the problem.” I think we as an industry are foolish if we look to the government or a politician to solve our problems. Yay! Thanks for the shout out! :-)Tomorrow is my third pick up-very exciting. Though I am a bit ovemlhewred-undertaking a whole share on my own (well, I do have Adam, but he’s a bit less veggiephilic than me) was a bit overzealous? My fridge (that I share with two roommates) is overflowing with greens and I’m struggling to get them all eaten, with my normal eat-out, order-in work-14-hour days lifestyle. This morning I woke up 30 minutes early to prepare my large dinner salad (three delicious types of lettuces) and brunch chard and broccoli fritatta to eat at work.We also have a hook up with other local farms that have grass finished beef, pastured poultry and eggs and fresh raw milk and cheeses. So last night at 1am, Adam and I were ordering meat, eggs and cheese for the freezer-the farmers link them up with the CSA, so next week in addition to my heaps of veggies, I’ll have steaks, eggs, chickens and cheese. I hope my roommates don’t kick me out for lack of fridge space! Thanks so much for all your help and advice-I definitely wouldn’t be eating this well if not for you!Oh, and I haven’t seen SATC yet (going tomorrow night) but I have a feeling that my life isn’t quite like theirs LOVE!
